Are you a woodwind, brass or percussion player? Are you looking for a fun place to play and to meet some new musical friends?

The Halifax Concert Band rehearses September- June each year on Tuesdays from 6:30pm- 8:30pm at Halifax West High School.

Membership Expectations

In keeping with the objectives of the Halifax Concert Band Society, members are expected to:

  • have access to their own musical instrument (except percussionists);
  • attend most rehearsals and concerts (advise their section rep and/or musical director of any absences from a rehearsal or event) 
  • maintain any music folder(s) and other HCBS property
  • ensure that such music and/or property makes it to rehearsals and concerts, even when the members cannot attend themselves;
  • display appropriate ensemble skills by being attentive during rehearsals and concerts
New Members

New members should demonstrate the ability to:

  • perform high school level band literature, and be comfortable performing in the major keys of D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab and Gb concert;
  • perform a chromatic scale in running eighth notes (m.m. quarter note = 84) starting on any note;
  • read and perform rhythmic groupings of 16th notes in simple time signatures (2/4, 3/4, etc.) and to read and perform in compound meters (e.g. 6/8);
  • recognize and correct intonation issues;
  • (percussionists only) handle rudimentary snare drum and bass drum techniques (experience on drumset, tympani and mallet instruments would be needed) – the ability to cover multiple parts would be considered an asset.
