HCB Rehearsal Notes April 19

Hi all,
I am very much looking forward to being back on the podium this coming Tuesday night! Before that happens though, I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to Mark Cuming for stepping in and running rehearsals for the last few weeks and expertly grooming a very good set of pieces for our upcoming Spring Concert!! Thanks Mark for all that you do!
I thought what would be best for the April 19th rehearsal would be for me to hold a “mock performance” run-through of most or all of the pieces that you have been working on in my absence. Some of these will be a revisit for my conducting duties and some indeed will be more of a sight reading task for me, most notably the Kent Steerwell titles. We’ll run some chorales at the beginning and then I’ll call titles in no particular order to get a good idea of the progress being made.
Thanks and see you Tuesday. Dave

HCB Rehearsal Notes April 12. 2022

Hello, Halifax Concert Band members.
Here is the rehearsal scheme for this next rehearsal on Tuesday, April 12, at 6:30 pm. It will be in the band room at Halifax West High School, as has been established. On this episode, we’ll warm up with some chorales from the /More Assorted Chorales/ sheet. After that, my plan is to slug through most, if not all of the repertoire candidates for our proposed concert in June.
It would be good to have these tunes in presentable shape for the rehearsal on the 19th., so that Dave can have a good idea about what he would like to program. Yes, he will return on the 19th. and I will return to the ranks.
Here are the tunes we will play THIS Tuesday: /A Childhood Remembered/ /Praeludium / /Star Trek Through the Years/ /Sea Songs/ /Lincoln/ /We Want it All/ /Waltz in the Old Style/ /Jump n the Line/ /In Their Honor/ /Curtain Call/ (We’ll_try_ this, but the band executive may have to free up funds in order to hire an octopus to play the percussion 2 part).
*Note:* This isn’t the rehearsal order, but I can tell you that /In Their Honor/ and/Curtain Call/ will be the first and second selections. After that, tunes will be called as necessary.
I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday. Stay healthy now.
Mark Cuming First Officer- Deputy Conductor

HCB Rehearsal Notes April 5, 2022

Hello, everybody:
The next rehearsal of the HCB will be Tuesday, April 5, at 6:30 in the band room of Halifax West High School. In fact, rehearsals from now on will be full band in the band room.
Rehearsals on the 5th. and 12th., will be handled by Mark and from the 19th onwards by Dave.
In these uncertain times, rumours abound as to the possibility of renewed COVID restrictions, or at least, closed schools, but, for now, we are okay and we’ll proceed with preparations for a spring show. That will happen likely in the second week of June.
As for this week coming up, we will be playing through and working on these candidates for that show:
/A Childhood Remembered/ /Sea Songs/ (with a new 1st and 3rd horn part). /Curtain Call/ /Prealudium/ /Star Trek Through the Years/ /We want It All/ /Lincoln/ /Waltz in the Old Style/ /Jump in the Line/ /In Their Honor
/ Wow! Look at that line up! I can hardly wait. See you Tuesday. M.C.

HCB Rehearsal Notes March 29

Hi all First of all, thank you all for last Tuesday’s rehearsal! It was really satisfying to be able to gather again and start back into the process of music making together.
We would like to keep the same rehearsal plan for both groups that we followed last Tuesday and see if there may be some more music from the repertoire list to be handed out.
If there are any members that can arrive a little bit early to help move chairs and stands and help set up both rooms, it would be appreciated.
For reference, I will include last week’s rehearsal plan here.
*6:30 *Rehearsal (Part 1) in assigned group and place** *7:30 Five minute break* *7:35 Rehearsal (Part 2) in same assigned group and place* *8:30 Dismissal * *Mark and I will be rehearsing each group for an hour and then trading groups and will be selecting repertoire from the following set of pieces.*
*Dave’s List* *Three Ayres from Gloucester (if available)* *In Their Honor * *Sea Songs* *A Childhood Remembered* *Curtain Call*
*Mark’s list* *We Want It All* *Star Trek * *Mark’s Fugue * *Jump In The Line
